Using the Question Library

D2L’s question library is a repository for quiz questions. You can use it to not only store quiz questions, but also randomly add questions or subsets of questions to your quiz.

Add Sections to the Question Library

As a best practice, we recommend that you create a section in your Question Library, then add your quiz questions to this section. This will make it easier for you to select the questions you want to add to your quiz, especially if you plan to randomize the questions on your quiz.

  1. Go to the Quizzes area. The Manage Quizzes page will open.
  2. Click the Question Library link at the top of the page.
  3. Click the New button at the top of the page, and select Section. The New Section page will open.
  4. Enter a name for the section in the “Section Name” field.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. You’ll return to the Question Library page, and your new section will appear in its list of items.

Add Questions to the Question Library

There are 12 question types in D2L (multiple-choice, written response, etc.), and the process for building each question type is slightly different.

  1. Go to the Quizzes area. The Manage Quizzes page will open.
  2. Click the Question Library link at the top of the page.
  3. Click the section to which you want to add questions.
  4. Click the New button at the top of the page, then select the question type you want to add from the dropdown menu.
  5. Fill out all required fields for the question type you selected and any optional fields:
    • You must always fill out the “Question Text” field. This is what is displayed to students.
    • A point value is required for all questions. The default is 1 point.
    • All questions can be named with the optional “Title” field or by selecting Options and Add a Short Description from the dropdown menu. If you do not enter a title or description, the system will use the full question text as the title. The title or description is never displayed to students.
    • “Weight” refers to what percent credit a student will receive for selecting an answer. Some questions will automate a weight for the question, while others will need to be specified. You can also customize the weight of some questions for partial credit by selecting Options and then Add Custom Weights from the dropdown menu.
    • The “Feedback” field gives information to students who select that answer. They will only be able to see it after they have submitted their answers to the quiz. You can add feedback in the “Feedback” field next to the question or by selecting Options and Add Feedback, depending on the question type.
    • Text you enter in the “Question Hints” field or by selecting Add Hint from the Options dropdown menu can be viewed by students as they are answering the question.
  6. When you are finished creating your question, save your work.
    • Click Save if you want to save the question and return to the main Question Library page.
    • Click Save and Copy if you want to save the question you just created and create a new question of the same type that retains the current question’s properties.
    • Click Save and New to save the question and to continue creating questions of the same type.

NOTE: You can preview questions as they will appear to students by clicking the Preview button at the bottom of the page.

Import Questions to your Quiz from the Question Library

  2. Click the Add/Edit Questions button.
  3. Select Import.
